Spat and Year Olds

Spat is collected every September in the cold, clean waters off the coast of Maine, 10 miles offshore. In December, spat collection bags are taken back in shore to avoid storm surge. The following spring, we sort through the bags, removing any spat of different species, predators, etc. The spat then is sorted into pearl nets or lantern nets. All spat for sale will have been sorted and graded. We find that the spat is cleaner and grows faster if it is allowed time in nets as soon as possible. To learn more about this process, go to the “How it All Works” tab.
